    Neil Diamond was born in New York City, New York on January 24, 1941. His background is Jewish. He is one of the world's most successful singer/songwriters. Neil had several worldwide hits during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. In 1984, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Neil Diamond went to high school with Barbra Streisand, where he was in a singing group with her. This experience led him into the music business.

    Neil Diamond started writing and recording songs in 1960. His first recording contract was with Duel Records. Two unsuccessful singles (duets with high school buddy Jack Parker) were released. In 1962, he went solo with a contract from Columbia Records. They also released two unsuccessful singles and then dropped him. So, he returned to full time song writing. "The Monkees" then recorded several of his songs and they became hits; his fame began to grow. In 1966, Neil signed on with Bang Records and released his first big hit, "Solitary Man". After having several hit songs, he became dissatisfied with Bang and entered into a career slump; finally leaving Bang Records.

    In 1970, Neil Diamond signed with MCA Records and released some of his most popular hits, including "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", and "Sweet Caroline" (written for Caroline Kennedy). His slump was over, and a superstar was born! Neil has starred in several movies as well as making TV appearances. His last hit single was in 1986, and he then entered a second slump in his career, however he became popular once more in the late 1990s. Neil Diamond has been married twice, both times ending in divorce. He has four children, two from each wife. He is now in a relationship with Rachel Farley, an Australian, whom he met in 1996.

    Neil Diamond is one of the few artists whose recordings are copyrighted under their own name. His newest album, "Home Before Dark", was released in May 2008.
