Mary J. Blige was born in the Bronx, New York City, New York on January 11, 1971. She is an award winning hip hop, soul and R&B singer/songwriter. She has won a total of eight Grammys to date. While shopping in a local mall in 1988, she recorded a cover of the song "Rapture". Her mother's current boyfriend took the tape to Jeff Redd who had a contract with Uptown Records (part of MCA Records). He took it to the president of Uptown records and they offered her a contract in 1989. At first she only provided backing vocals for the other recording artists. But in 1991, they started her first album, "What's the 411?" It was released in 1992 and produced two top ten singles. Mary's music career was born; she was a success.

Soon she became know as the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul". Mary won her first Grammy in 1996 for "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By", a duet with rapper Method Man. On December 7, 2003 she married Martin Kendu Isaacs, who is now her manager. Her eighth album, "Growing Pains", was released on December 18, 2007. It is her fourth number one hit album. She won the 2008 Grammy Award "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" for "Disrespectful" a duet with Chaka Khan and the Grammy Award "Best Gospel Performance" for "Never Gonna Break My Faith" a duet with Aretha Franklin.
