    Madonna Louise Ciccone (now Ritchie) was born to Silvio and Madonna Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan on August 16, 1958. She is an American award winning singer/songwriter and actress. The media has named her the "Queen of Pop". Madonna is ranked by the RIAA as the "Best Selling Female Rock Artist of the Twentieth Century". She was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" on March 10, 2008.

    After Madonna's mother died of cancer in 1963, she convinced her father to let her attend Ballet lessons. She continued to study and train for the Ballet even into college. At the end of her second year at the University of Michigan, Madonna, at the urging of her instructor, went to New York City to pursue a professional dance career in Ballet. She had a very hard time after she arrived there. In 1979, she formed her first rock band with then boyfriend Dan Gilroy, whom she had met while on a dancing tour. Madonna played the drums and sang. Then in 1980, she formed another rock band with new boyfriend Stephen Bray. They played in many dance clubs and came to the attention of Seymour Stein of Sire Records. They gave her her first recording contract in 1982.

    Madonna released her first single, "Everybody", in 1982; it went to number 3 on the pop charts. Her first album, "Madonna", released in 1983 went to number 8 on the charts. Her second album, "Like a Virgin", released in 1984 made it all the way to number one. A new star was born! In 1985, Madonna starred in her first movie, "A Certain Sacrifice". In 1996, she starred in the movie "Evita"; winning an Oscar for the song, "You Must Love Me". She also won the Golden Globe award "Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy". She has won seven Grammys through out her career. In December of 2000, she married her current husband, Guy Ritchie. She will start her "Sticky & Sweet" tour in September 2008.
