Marc Anthony Information

    Marc Anthony was born Marco Antonio Muniz to Felipe and Guillermina Muniz on September 24, 1968 in New York City, NY. His parents were from Puerto Rico. They named him after the famous Mexican singer, Marco Antonio Muniz, who was very popular in Puerto Rico. Anthony's father was a musician, so he came from a musical family.

    He started his musical career while still a teenager, writing songs for New York City's underground dance music known as Freestyle Music (based on Latin music). At that time, he changed his name to avoid confusion with his namesake. He wrote, sung, and recorded his first Freestyle record Rebel in 1988. Showing he was one of the best Freestyle singers.

    In 1993, he switched from Freestyle music to Salsa (Spanish) music. His first Salsa album "Otra nota" became a big hit in 1993. In that same year, he also appeared in his first movie. All of his Salsa albums have been big hits. In 1999, he released his first English album, attempting to cross over into mainstream pop like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. It, and his second English album, was received with mixed success. He had several hit songs off them; however, the individual albums were not real big hits. In addition, in 1999, he won the Grammy Awards "Best Latin Pop Album of the Year". He has also won several Latin Grammy Awards.

    He has one daughter out of wedlock, by a former girlfriend. In 2000, he married Dayanara Torres, a former Miss Universe. They have two sons. They had a very stormy marriage first separating then reuniting (publicly) then re-separating (due to a paternity suit against him, unproven) and finally divorcing in 2004. Right after his divorce was finalized, he married Jennifer Lopez. At the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards, they sang a duet together -- Escapemonos. He also won the Best Latin Pop Album of the Year at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards. In 2007, he and Jennifer starred in the movie El Cantante; they played Hector and Nilda Lavoe, a famous Salsa music star and his wife.
