George Michael was born George Kyriacos Panayiotou to Lesley and Kyriacos Panayiotou (changed to John Panos) in London, UK on June 25, 1963. His father was a restaurant owner from Cyprus and his mother was half-Jewish. He took the stage name George Michael when he started his professional music career in the early 1980's. He started a short-lived band with his best friends from school, "The Executive", one of whom was Andrew Ridgeley. In 1981, he and Ridgeley formed the duo "Wham!". Their first album, "Fantastic", was released in 1983. It hit number one on the UK charts. With the release of their second album, "Make It Big", in 1984, they became international superstars. "Wham!" broke up in 1986. The cause of the break up was George's desire to attract a different audience.

George started his solo career in 1987 with a bang. He recorded a duo with Aretha Franklin, "I Know You Were Waiting (For Me)". It was a number one hit and won the 1988 Grammy "Best R&B Vocal Performance – Duo or Group". He also released his first solo album, "Faith", in 1987. It hit number one worldwide. His follow on tour in 1988 was sold out. He won the 1989 Grammy "Album of the Year" for "Faith". This made him a mega-star. However, in 1990, he decided not to do any more album promotions for his recordings. It later came out that this was because he was struggling with his public image and his private homosexuality.

In 1998, he announced he was gay after being arrested for "lewd behavior" in a public restroom in Los Angeles. He has also admitted to having drug problems, mostly with marijuana. However, he has remained a popular performer in spite of his difficulties. In 2006, he released a compilation of his greatest hits in Europe, "Twenty Five", to celebrate his twenty-five years as a recording artist. The album will be released in the US on April 1, 2008. During 2007, he toured Europe on his "Twenty Five" tour. In the summer of 2008, he will bring his "Twenty Five" tour to North America. His first tour here in 17 years.
