Garth Brooks (Troyal Garth Brooks) was born on February 7, 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the youngest child (of six children) born to Troyal and Colleen Brooks. His mother was also a country singer and a television star. However, he experienced many different musical influences while growing up, particularly hard rock. His father taught him how to play the guitar. So you might say he came from a musical family. After high school, Garth attended Oklahoma State University, OSU, at Stillwater. Although he was there on a sports scholarship and majoring in advertising, he starting playing and singing country music in his spare time. After graduating in 1984 he started his professional music career. He started performing in bars and clubs, especially the Tumbleweed in Stillwater. In 1985, he visited Nashville in an effort to secure a recording contract, but failed to do so. In 1986 he married Sandy Mahl, who he had met while at OSU. They have three daughters. In 1987 they moved to Nashville, where Garth began to record demo records. He was also introduced to Trisha Yearwood, another aspiring country singer. They became good friends and promised to help each other further their careers. Garth received his first recording contract from Capitol Records in 1988. He kept his promise to Yearwood by billing her as his opening act on his first concert tour in 1991. She also became his duet partner. Garth's first four albums were a huge success. During the following decade, he dominated the country music scene. He was able to successfully integrate both pop and rock forms into his music. This enabled him to rapidly cross over into mainstream pop. All the while, he remained at the top of the country music singles and albums charts. Through out the 1990's, Garth Brooks tickets were in high demand both here and overseas. He had several sold out overseas tours in the middle and late 90's. He performed concerts in Australia, Brazil, East Asia, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the rest of Europe. During this period he continued to break all sales and concert attendance records. On August 7, 1997, he drew the largest crowd ever at New York City's Central Park. He estimated that there were about 900,000 people in and around the sold out arena.
