Foo Fighters is an internationally acclaimed hard rock band formed by Dave Grohl in Seattle in 1995. He served as drummer for the now defunct band Nirvana for three years. After Nirvana dissolved due to the death of its lead vocalist, Grohl went to a recording studio and recorded a demo album. On this album, he sang all the vocals and played all the instruments. The demo came to the noticed of Capitol Records and they decided to produce it. To keep it from being a one-man band project, Grohl decided to form a real band to promote the album. He chose the name of Foo Fighters from a World War II term (foo fighter) for unidentified flying objects (UFOs). He has always been fascinated with this subject. He recruited William Goldsmith on drums, Nate Mendel on bass guitar, and Pat Smear on guitar to fill out the band. That first album, Foo Fighters was released in the summer of 1995. The Foo Fighters became a popular band.

Foo Fighters have won four Grammy Awards. Two of them were for the Best Rock Album of the Year. Briefly, in 2000, the band supported Alive & Well, a group that does not believe that HIV is the cause of AIDS. The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years. The current band members are: Dave Grohl (lead vocalist/guitarist), Taylor Hawkins (drummer/percussionist), Nate Mendel (bass guitarist), and Chris Shiflett (backup vocalist/guitarist). They have released six studio albums. This September they released their newest album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. They are currently on their worldwide tour promoting this album.
