Coldplay Information

    Coldplay is an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1997. The original and current members are Guy Berryman (bass), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Will Champion (drums, etc), and Chris Martin (vocalist/keyboards/guitar). The band was formed while all four members were students at University College London. At first, they called themselves Pectoralz and then Starfish until a mutual friend, Tim Rice-Oxley of Keane, told them they could use the name of his old band, Coldplay. After college finals, the band received a contract for five albums from Parlophone in 1999. Soon after, Martin kicked Champion off the band, then begged him to return and went off on an alcoholic binge afterwards. However, Coldplay soon overcame these problems by deciding to share all profits and swear off hard drug use.

    With the release of their single "Yellow", in June 2000, the band received their breakthrough; the single went to #4 on the UK charts. Their first album, "Parachutes" released in 2000, went to #1 on the UK charts. In November of 2000, Coldplay released "Parachutes" in the US, and it slowly went platinum; receiving an honors mention at the 2002 Grammys. Their second album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head", released in 2002 won the Grammy for "Best Alternative Music Album" in 2003. The band released their fourth album, "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends", in June of 2008, and it went immediately to #1 in the UK. They start their US tour in July 2008.
