Celine Dion is an internationally acclaimed French Canadian singer/songwriter. She was born Celine Marie Claudette Dion in Charlemagne, Quebec on March 30, 1968 to Therese and Adhemar Dion. She is their youngest and fourteenth child. Celine grew up singing with her brothers and sisters at the family's piano bar. With family help, she wrote her first lyrics for her song "Ce n'etait qu'un reve", English -- "It Was Only a Dream", at the age of 12. One of her brothers sent a recording of the song to Rene Angelil, a music manager in Quebec. Her voice had such a strong effect upon him that he agreed to manage her, mortgaging his home in order to produce her first album "La voix du bon Dieu", English -- "The Voice of God", in 1981. At 13, she became an instant success in Quebec. The next year, she won the "Top Performer" and "Best Song" Awards at the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival held in Japan. In 1988, she won the Eurovision Song Contest.
After watching Michael Jackson perform on stage when she was 18, she decided to be a superstar like him. Angelil arranged for a complete makeover of her appearance and sent her to learn English in 1989. She broke into the English market with the release of her 15th album (but first English) "Unison" in 1990. It was not a huge success, but one song, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now", reached #4 on the charts. Her English career break through came the next year when she and Peabo Bryson were chosen by Disney to sing the title duet of "Beauty and the Beast". It became her second top ten hit single. The song won the Oscar for the "Best Song of 1991". She and Bryson also won the 1992 Grammy Award for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal". The song appeared on her second album sung in English, "Celine Dion", in 1992. Her status as a superstar was confirmed.
Since then, Celine has continued to record both French and English albums, keeping to her theme of "Love". In 1994, she married her manager, Rene Angelil. Her fourth English studio album "Falling into You" in 1996, won two Grammys ("Best Pop Album" and "Album of the Year"). Her fifth English studio album in 1997, contained the hit single "My Heart Will Go On" from the very popular movie "Titanic" (it is now her signature song). For it, she also won two Grammys ("Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" and "Record of the Year").
From 2000 until 2002, Celine stopped recording and performing to tend to her sick husband and to have her first child – a son. In March of 2002, she returned to her music career with the release of her 29th album (6th English studio album) "A New Day has Come". In March of 2003, she started playing the house act at Caesars Palace in Los Vegas (will end on December 15, 2007). In 2005, she won the Chopard Diamond World Music Award "Best-Selling Female Vocalist". Her 36th album "Taking Chances" will be released on November 13, 2007. Commencing on February 14, 2008, in South Africa, she will be on her world tour promoting the album.
