    Carrie Marie Underwood was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 10, 1983 to Carole and Stephen Underwood (their third daughter). She was raised on her familys farm in Checotah, Oklahoma. She started singing at church, while still a young girl. After high school, she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma; graduating in 2006 with honors. While at the university, she performed in its Downtown Country Show for two summers. In 2004, she auditioned for the TV show American Idol. She was chosen to appear on its fourth season; winning the championship in May 2005.

    Carrie then received a recording contract with Arista Records. Her first album, Some Hearts, was released in late 2005. It immediately rose to number one on the country charts. She has had four number one hit singles to date. She has won five Country Music Association Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and four Grammys. Her second album, Carnival Ride, was released in November 2007. Carrie is a vegetarian because she could not bear the thought of eating one of her animals that she helped raise on the farm.
