Billy Joel Information Billy Joel, William Martin Joel, was born on May 9, 1949 in Levittown, New York (the Bronx). His father was from Germany and his mother from England. He is now one of the world's most popular composers, singer/songwriters, guitarists, and pianists. The RIAA lists him as the sixth best selling recording artist of all time. During the 1970's, 1980's, and the early 1990's, he always had songs in the top ten hits. He has won six Grammy Awards and one Tony Award. In 1992, he was inducted into the "Songwriters Hall of Fame" and into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 1999. He has recorded 14 studio albums. Billy Joel was from a very young age interested in classical music - when he started taking piano lessons. As a teenager, he was heavily influenced by the music of the Beatles. To learn how to protect himself, he took boxing lessons after high school, going on to win 22 amateur fights. At the same time, he began his professional music career - mainly playing keyboards and doing vocals with several different local bands. He signed his first recording contract with Family Productions and released his first album "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971. However, they mastered the recording at the wrong speed, so it sounded like he was the Chipmunks. To escape the bad contract, he moved to California and played the piano in a local bar. In 1973, Columbia Records discovered Billy Joel and they took over his recording contract. His first album for them, "Piano Man", became a big hit. The lead song, "Piano Man" is now his signature song and an enduring hit. Billy Joel's superstar career took off. In 1987, he became the first pop star to tour the Soviet Union. In 1993, he recorded his last vocal album "River of Dreams". However, he continued to tour. His last studio album, "Fantasies & Delusions", released in 2001, contained classical piano compositions. He is now in his third marriage, to Katie Lee (a chef), and has one daughter, Alexa, by his second wife, supermodel Christie Brinkley. Billy Joel released his first song since 1993, "All My Life", on February 27, 2007 as a single. He is now on tour, with the last performance scheduled for Dec 6th.
