Barry Manilow is a well-known American songwriter/singer, composer, and music producer. He was born Barry Alan Pincus in Brooklyn, New York on June 17, 1943 to Edna and Harold Pincus. They had a Jewish Russian background. His parents soon divorced, and she moved in with her parents. Young Barry's grandparents persuaded him to start playing the accordion. After his mother remarried, the swing and jazz music records belonging to his stepfather, Willie Murphy, influenced him during his teens. On his 13th birthday, he received a piano from his stepfather. He stopped playing the accordion and commenced playing it. Around that same time, his mother had their last name legally changed to her parent's name, Manilow.
After high school, Barry attended the New York College of Music and the famed Juilliard School of Music. He started his professional music career in 1964 when he wrote the original music score for the play "The Drunkard". That same year, he married Susan Deixler, his girl friend from high school. However, his focusing on his music career adversely affected his marriage, and it was annulled in January 1966. In the mean time, he had started writing and singing jingles for radio and television commercials. After meeting Bette Midler in 1971, he became her pianist, producer, and music director for 4 years. In 1973, he released his first album, "Barry Manilow I". It was unsuccessful, but Bette Midler started letting him sing his songs while she was on intermission.
In 1974, he started working with Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records. He released his second album "Barry Manilow II" (included the hit single "Mandy") which became a big hit. From then until the early 1980's, Barry had 25 top hit songs. One of these songs was "Copacabana", which he performed for the movie "Foul Play". In 1985, he starred in the TV movie "Copacabana" based on the hit song. He also appeared in many TV specials, though out the years. He has won one Tony Award, one Grammy Award, and five Emmy Awards.
In the 1990's, he stopped recording albums containing songs written by him and became a cover artist (a singer who sings other songwriter's songs). However, he still wrote songs and composed music for other singers, movies, and plays. Since 2005, he has been the house act at the Las Vegas Hilton. On January 31, 2006, he released "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties" which became his first number 1 hit album in 29 years. On October 31, 2006, he released "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties" (another hit). This year on September 18, he released "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies". He also started a new tour in August with four performances. He will be giving performances in December and in February 2008.
