Andre Leon Marie Nicolas Rieu was born in Maastricht, Netherlands on October 1, 1949. His father was a conductor and he was raised in a musical family. He started playing the violin when he was five. He attended a couple of music conservatories in the Netherlands and the Music Academy in Brussels, Belgium. Andre decided to pursue playing the waltz form of classical music, after seeing the reaction of the audience to his performance of Franz Lehar's "Gold and Silver" waltz, while he was attending University. In 1987, he formed the Johann Strauss Orchestra and his own production company. They started touring Europe and he became known as "The King Of Waltz". They have received numerous music awards. Andre plays a Stradivarius violin made in 1667. He will be on a brief tour of Canada and the US during May of 2008.
